Verizon Motorola Google Droid Released!
Friday, November 6th, 2009 saw the official release of the new Motorola Verizon Android 2.0 device, affectionately called Droid, to the open market. This device, widely seen as the first true competition to Apple's iPhone, has stirred quite a bit of comment.
The Droid has been highly publicized, even showing up briefly on Google's home page. Verizon, Motorola and Google have been quick to pit Droid's capabilities against the shortfalls of the iPhone, advertizing that everything that iDont, Droid Does!
Initial pricing information for the Droid is $199.99 with a 2 year Verizon contract, a $100.00 mail-in rebate and an additional $30.00/month charge for web access.
For Verizon customers, who have been shut out of the iPhone market, Christmas truly has arrived. With the cellular market being driven by strict customer agreements between cellular providers, cell phone manufacturers and cell phone operating software distributers, which cellular service an end user selects drives which cell phone, and hence, what new features the end user can utilize. Although the Motorola Razor was all the rage several years ago, AT&T and Apple have stolen the spotlight for the last few years with the iPhone. That dominance is now at stake with the advent of the Droid.
The Droid is a joint venture between hardware manufacturer Motorola, cellular provider Verizon and search engine power house Google. Motorola manufactures the phone itself. Google wrote and provides the operating system called Android 2.0. Verizon provides the cellular network and the customer basis for the phone.
